Central Air vs. Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioner: What’s the Difference

Looking to install an air conditioner in your Conway, AR home? If so, you might be wondering: what’s the difference between central air and a ductless mini-split air conditioner?

In truth, quite a bit. While these are both options for cooling a home, they are radically different in the ways that they’re structured and operate. We’re going to discuss their differences below, helping you make the right choice.

Air Delivery

The biggest difference between central air and the ductless mini-split is the way that the two systems deliver air. Whereas the central air system sends air through a series of ducts, the mini-split system is mounted to an interior wall and blows air directly into the room.

This has both upsides and downsides for both units. Because the mini-split system doesn’t utilize ducts, it tends to be more efficient. In addition, because it’s only capable of cooling one room, it can allow for temperature variation throughout the house.

On the other hand, if you want to use a ductless mini-split to cool your entire home, you’ll have to install several units. This will cost much more money than a single central air system, which is designed to cool every room in the house.

Both central air and ductless mini-splits can be effective. However, they’re effective in different ways.

If your goal is to cool only a single room, then a ductless mini-split system would be ideal. That said, if you want to cool your entire home, then a central AC unit would undoubtedly be the better option. Central AC would ensure that your home is cooled in a balanced manner, with every room possessing, more or less, the same temperature.

When it comes to the complexity of installation, there’s no doubt: a central air unit is much more difficult to install. This is because central air requires the installation of ducts. If a home has already been built, installing a new duct system within it can prove difficult.

Ductless mini-split systems, on the other hand, need only to be mounted on their respective walls. They can be installed in mere hours, whereas a central AC unit would take days to install.

Another thing that’s different about the ductless mini-split system and central air system is the way that they affect the aesthetics of your home. While the mini-split has a rather large effect on your home’s interior, the central air system has very little effect.

This is because the mini-split necessitates that a big and bulky cooling unit be mounted to your interior wall. Central air, on the other hand, only necessitates that air vents be attached to your walls.
