Do You Have a Broken AC? Signs You Need to Repair or Replace Your AC

broken ac

Published on Jul 21, 2020 in Air Conditioners

Americans as a whole spend $29 billion on air conditioning their houses each year. On average, individuals will spend anywhere from $100 to $300 a month to cool their homes.

If you have a broken AC, you could be spending more than you need to on your electricity bill every month. Now that it’s summer, you want to be sure you’re getting the best bang for your buck.

Do you want to know how to tell if your AC is broken? Keep reading for some signs that you need to repair or replace your broken AC unit.

Signs of a Broken AC: Warm Air or No Air

It’s the hottest month of the year, you don’t want to be stuck in a blistering house googling ‘is my ac broken?’ If you notice a change in your AC unit’s airflow, it’s most likely time to call a repair service.

A big sign that your AC is broken is when it starts expelling warm air. This could be the cause of a faulty compressor, low refrigerant, or a broken air duct.

If you turn your AC on but little to no air comes out, it could also be a compressor or ductwork issue. Either of these issues could end up costing you big bucks on your electricity bill, so turn off your AC until you get a repair or replacement.

Loud Noises

Air conditioners aren’t the quietest appliances in your home. Still, there is a difference between the sound of a running AC and a broken AC.

Take note of any unusual sounds that come from your AC unit. If you hear grinding, scraping, squealing, or thumps, it may be an issue with your air conditioner’s belt.

A broken belt can cause other damages to your AC unit as well. Be sure to call a repair company to fix the belt before your AC is deemed unsalvagable.

Funny Smell

The air that blows out of your AC shouldn’t have a smell. If you notice a strong, pungent odor, it could be a sign that the insulation in your unit has burned out.

If you experience an old, stale smell, this is a sign that there is mold in your AC unit. If this is the case, schedule service as soon as possible, as mold in the air can make you and your family ill.

A leaking AC could mean a few things. Worst case scenario, your AC is leaking refrigerant, which is a poisonous substance if ingested. In this instance, you should call in an emergency repair before any family members or pets come into contact with the liquid.

In a less serious case, your AC may be leaking water. This is a sign that the condensation tube is blocked or damaged.

Either way, you need to repair your AC if it’s leaking any substance.

Higher Electricity Bills

If you notice that your electricity bill has increased significantly, it’s usually a sign that an electric appliance has become inefficient. If it skyrockets in the summer, your AC unit may not be running the way it should be.

To prevent a hike in your electricity bill, it’s suggested that you get your AC tuned up each year before summer begins.
