The Most Common Furnace Problems Explained

common furnace problems

Published on Feb 11, 2021 in Heat Pumps

When it comes to heating systems, furnaces are a great option. They are generally long-lasting and furnace maintenance is relatively simple, especially when it is regularly inspected and used in a proper manner.

But even the most well-kept furnace is bound to break down or experience trouble from time to time. Some issues are minor and easy to resolve, while others may require the help of a professional. Read on to find out the most common furnace problems and possible ways to solve them.

Dirty Filter

By far one of the most common furnace issues that can occur is that the filter becomes dirty or over clogged. This will prevent the furnace from running as it should, but luckily, it can be remedied by cleaning or replacing the filter. Ideally, you should be changing your filter around every three months.

Malfunctioning Thermostat

If you notice your furnace is not running as it should be, one of the first things you should do is check your thermostat settings. If the fan is set to auto, for example, this means the fan is always running, which will wear down your thermostat battery faster and cause your furnace to run inefficiently. Again, this is an issue you can solve yourself.

Odd Noises Coming From Furnace

If you notice unusual noises coming from your furnace this could be for a number of different reasons. It could mean a loose panel needs to be tightened, a dirty filter, a leak in the ductwork, or a bad bearing that needs to be replaced. If you’re unable to find the source, then it’s safest to call a professional for assistance.

Pilot Light Issues

If you have an older model furnace that isn’t working, try taking a look at the pilot light. If the pilot light is an odd color, is very dim or flickering, then it’s possible that there is carbon monoxide in the atmosphere surrounding your furnace, and you should call a professional. If it’s merely out, then you can find tips to relight it here.

Cracked Heat Exchanger

A cracked heat exchanger is a serious issue that can be avoided by having your furnace inspected at regular intervals. If you notice soot around your furnace, or if you or anyone in your home are experiencing signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, then you should call an HVAC professional immediately.

Frequent Cycling

Is your filter cycling between on and off modes? This is a furnace issue we encounter on a regular basis. If it is, this may be a sign of a clogged filter, improper airflow, or your thermostat may be on the wrong setting.
